This photograph shows the old chapel at Leafield. It was originally built sometime before 1458, but was enlarged in 1822. It stood in the present churchyard and was sited where a clump of trees now is, to the south of the path leading to the present church. It was demolished when the present church was built in 1859 and the stone incorporated into the new church.

In the foreground of the photograph is what remained at that time of the village cross.  An article by John Akerman in 1858 volume of Archaeologia mentions that 'The shaft of this structure was a short time ago overthrown by mischievous hands, and it now protects the angle of a smithy from the shock of passing vehicles'.

The cross was restored in 1873 to commemorate the inhabitants deliverance from the scourge of smallpox.
