Demolition plan rejected at former F1 site

The former headquarters of a Formula One team should not be demolished without planning permission, councillors have recommended.

A meeting of West Oxfordshire District Council’s Cabinet saw it confirm an Article 4 Direction for the Leafield Technical Centre at Langley to prevent the demolition of the buildings by the site’s owner, Leafield Holdings Ltd, a property investment company, without planning permission.

A potential buyer has expressed an interest in buying the site and maintaining it as commercial premises.

Cllr Warwick Robinson, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Economy, said: “The Leafield Technical Centre is a very important site for employment in the District, particularly for firms in the engineering and hi-tech sectors.

As a modern commercial complex there is no reason why it can’t continue to provide a centre for high value jobs. It would be wrong to see that potential lost.”

The Article 4 Direction was originally enforced in May for a six-month consultation period.

The above decision was agreed by the Cabinet on 27 July and is subject to the usual call-in period.
