Leafield Community Gym Presents New Table Tennis Table for Village Group

LEAFIELD Community Gym has come to the rescue of the village table tennis players, who on club nights have had to share the one table that was deemed usable.

The gym’s committee voted to spend nearly £400 on buying a new table tennis table for the group which meets in Leafield Village Hall.

The club often has at least eight players turn up for the Monday night sessions, but one of their two tables is, in the words of one of the players, “way past its sell-by date”.

“It slopes down in the corner and we only use it if we’re desperate,” says spokesman Priscilla Allmark. “Sometimes in the busier winter months we might have a dozen people waiting to play, so it has been far from ideal.

“We are absolutely delighted with our smart, new table and very grateful to the gym committee for this wonderful gesture.”

The 9ft x 5ft table will also be available to youth club members who meet on Thursdays at the same venue. It was in May that the newly-formed youth club also benefited from the gym’s generosity, when it was presented with a brand new pool table.

“We are celebrating our 2nd anniversary and wanted to mark the occasion by doing something significant,” said gym chairman Nick Birtley. “We are a non-profit-making organisation and our aim has always been to plough surplus funds back into the community.

“The pool table was very well received by the youth club and now the table tennis club will benefit from an injection of new equipment, which includes bats and balls.”

The table tennis club meets every Monday from 6.30-7.30pm. There are no membership fees – players just pay a small amount on the night to cover the village hall hire charge. Anyone interested in joining can contact priscillaallmark@gmail.com or rogerthewlis@gmail.com for more details.
