West Oxon District Council Forum Aims to Tackle Housing Waiting Lists

 West Oxfordshire District Council is  holding a special event to launch a new scheme aimed at encouraging private landlords to work in partnership with the council to help alleviate homelessness and reduce the local housing waiting list.

The Tenancy Support Package will be outlined at a two-hour session on Friday 13 September at Madley Park Hall in Witney. Private landlords are invited along to find out more about a range of benefits being made available to those who rent out their properties to families or individuals who are either likely to be, or are currently homeless.

The Council is one of a consortium across Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire using Government funding from the Private Rented Sector Access Fund to help people off the housing waiting lists and into private rented accommodation. Currently there are 2,629people on West Oxfordshire District Council’s housing waiting list, and it is hoped private landlords will attend the working brunch forum in September to find out more about the proposed benefits of working with the authority. These include, but are not limited to;

  • No fees
  • 1 month’s rent in advance
  • Cash deposit
  • 12 month membership to the National Landlord Association
  • Tenancy support
  • Support  line for landlords
  • Tenancy checks at 3, 6 and 11 months
  • Property inspections on request

Housing Property Manager Chauncy Seed said:  “We are very keen to reduce the housing waiting lists by getting people into private sector rented accommodation.

“There is very little social housing available and long waiting lists across our district. To help people get into the private sector we will need to provide financial assistance with deposits and rent advance, as this is the area which often proves a barrier for would-be tenants.

“The aim is to get 180 new tenancies across the partnership which would mean a budget of approximately £1,750 per property for incentives to landlords and tenants.

“We currently have a system where people bid for social housing and we are working on a bolt-on package to enable us to advertise private sector properties on the system and we are hoping landlords will use this opportunity to advertise free of charge on the new system when it becomes available later in the year.”

The event runs from 10am until 12pm on 13 September at Madley Park Hall, Northfield Farm Lane, Witney, OX28 1UE. For more information contact Chauncy.seed@publicagroup.uk or call her on 01285 623346
